why i made this site
written
somehow, despite it all, i still care.
open your eyes and look around
the present is terrifying. the future is even more so.
the planet is dying, and our progress towards stemming the
bleeding is proceeding at a snail's pace.
populist far-right political sentiment is rising around the
world, and they love a good scapegoat. the world is becoming
more hostile, less open, less free.
AI is eventually going
to kill us all, and if it doesn't, it's going to forever bring
an end to social mobility. nobody is coming to save you;
everyone aware of the situation is too busy trying to become
part of the techoaristocracy.
we are surrounded by ever increasing surveillance. we all know
that our phones spy on us, but it's not just the phones anymore.
interconnected camera networks spanning the country watch your
every move. every purchase you have ever made, every city you
have ever been, every person you have ever talked to... it's
sitting in a database somewhere, just waiting...
the
elimination of consensus reality started by exploitative
algorithms is being finalized by generative AI outputs
indistinguishable from reality. do you really still think that
everybody you talk to online is real?
the incomprehensible
web of systems that keep our modern world possible are fragile,
and we've now all had a peek at what happens when they're pushed
to their limits. what if something causes them to collapse?
but somehow, despite it all, i still have hope.
somehow, despite it all, i still care. i believe that a better world is possible.
the world has always been on fire. shit has always sucked.
i'd
like to do whatever i can to push things in the direction of
being a little bit less terrible.
reach heaven by violence, one star at a time.
what this site is
You are a leviathan of butterflies' butterfly effects. You can't discern your reach.
this site is one of many ways that i'd like to work towards making the world a bit less terrible.
i'd like to make my ideas more legible, in the hope that doing so could facilitate their spread. i am ultimately limited in what i can accomplish on my own, but i hope that if i package my ideas well enough, they might have a better shot at reaching the right people.
however, this site won't just be about me sharing my own thoughts; it's also going to be a platform i'd like to use to amplify works that have had a positive impact on my life.
