bodily autonomy is a human right

written

bodily autonomy is at the root of lots of political issues. it connects lgbtq+ rights, abortion access, medical assistance in dying, drug legalization, and likely many more things i'm forgetting about here.

it's time to stop pretending like this is a "debate". most of the "justifications" for limiting bodily autonomy are greatly exaggerated or even fabricated. the other side will not play fair, and pretending like they do is getting us nowhere.

bodily autonomy is a human right, and i'm sick of pretending that it's not. it doesn't need to be justified, it should be self-evident in the same way that "all men are created equal" is self-evident.

why the fuck should the state be able to say what i can and can't do to my own body?! it is my god given right to be able to buy ketamine and estradiol at a convenience store and then have group sex with my lesbian polycule!

of course, being a right doesn't mean that there are never limitations. for example, any reasonable person is willing to say that threatening to kill a political figure should be punished.

for example: i personally believe that recreational drugs shouldn't be accessible to those under 18, and that MAID should have guardrails to prevent people who are going through short difficult periods from ending their life.

but, i hope that someday we view countries which limit the bodily autonomy of their citizens the same way we view countries which limit speech today.

there's historical evidence of people consuming drugs and being gay/trans/nonbinary going back at least thousands of years. none of this is new, and we should stop treating it as such.
